How To Avoid Emergency Plumbing In The Northern Beaches

emergency plumbing leak

As the warm weather (at last!) begins to return, we Sydneysiders look forward to spending less time indoors and more time out in our classic great weather. But as busy North Shore plumbers, Killara Plumbing knows the great weather can wreak havoc on the home. It might sound counter-intuitive, but we want to share some top tips that will hopefully help you avoid calling emergency plumbers in the North Shore!

In most cases, these are all easy wins you can manage without our help. However, it goes without saying that if you need the best local plumbing service available, Killara Plumbing is just a phone call away!

HAVE YOUR HOT WATER SYSTEMS CHECKED

That got you, didn’t it? You didn’t think we’d suggest checking your hot water in the warmer weather, did you?

Well, it turns out spring is a terrific time to do precisely that! Hot water system repair work is quite common as summer comes to an end. It makes sense – the system has not been used nearly as much as it is over winter, and sediment builds up. Consider it similar to a car – if it’s not in regular use, it’s not very happy. So, as its peak season comes to an end, now is an excellent time to give it a once over and make sure everything is tickety-boo before it goes into temporary retirement (or at least slows down) over the hotter months.

Now is also a good time to think about gas hot water installation. Doing so means you’ll beat the frantic rush that usually happens before winter. You’ll give the system a chance to ensure all is working smoothly. As a result, come the cold months when you need it, you can rely on it 100%. Our team are all fully qualified hot water system installers and can take care of this – and the seasonal once-over – for you in no time at all.

CONDUCT A ROOT RISK ANALYSIS

The damage our Sydney trees can do to underground pipes and drains has to be seen to be believed.

We are often asked how to clear roots from drain pipes. The frustrating news is that by the time you have to ask this question, it is probably too late. Aside from regularly trimming any trees to try and minimise root growth, the most effective thing you can do is call us for a root risk analysis. Consider it the stitch in time that saves ninety because if those roots are established in your drains and pipes, then the cost and repair work can escalate dramatically.

Knowing this is such a significant plumbing problem in Killara and Sydney’s North Shores should be all the motivation you need to get us in. We’ll take about 30 minutes of your time and will provide a full assessment.

CLEAR DRAINS AND PIPES

It’s no surprise that drain cleaning in the Northern beaches is common practice. We cop our fair share of storms no matter what the seasons. Certainly, recent terrible floods have shown just how ferocious Mother Nature can be. Now is the time to conduct a full inspection of drains, pipes and gutters throughout the house. Any wet, soggy debris can soon turn dry, which you want to avoid at all costs. As Aussies, we have a responsibility to ourselves, our neighbours and our community at large to do everything we can to minimise the risk of bushfire. Keeping drains spic and span is a really obvious place to start.

However, as this fantastic weather starts to settle in, it’s a reminder that we’re about to put a lot of strain on the house. The washing machine will feel like it’s on a constant looping cycle thanks to all the sports and outdoor gear that needs cleaning. As a result of all the BBQs and outdoor catering, the dishwasher will probably give the washing machine a run for its money! The house is flat out, and so too is its plumbing! Avoid excess food waste and fats dripping down sinks, and clean shower and sink drains from hair.

CHECK FOR LEAKING TAPS

We mentioned above an increase in household activity and entertaining – all the more reason to inspect any leaking taps. This is the silent plumbing predator! We honestly attend so many households to fix leaking taps and toilets. Pipes tend to contract or expand depending on the surrounding temperature, so as the seasons change, now is the time to expect to find leaks. At best, they can be an embarrassing hiccup to your entertaining plans. At worst, they can call an end to any socialising as the toilet is closed off from use and subjected to a full plumbing repair.

In fact, just conducting a general inspection across all obvious areas of the home – sinks, showers, toilets, machines using water, gas heaters etc. – is a valuable exercise. You may find absolutely nothing to worry about at all. However, if you detect a problem, you’ve probably given yourself a great head start. It’s always easier to fix a small plumbing problem than a full-blown plumbing emergency!

INSTALL A QUALITY WATER FILTER

OK, so this won’t prevent you from calling for ‘an emergency plumber near me’, but it sure will make summer more enjoyable! Water filter installation gives you peace of mind that you and your family are consuming uncontaminated water. Such pure water streaming through your taps is amazing – you won’t look back!
