Water-Saving Plumbing Tips
As a Sydneysider, you don’t need to be told that water is in short supply, nor that it comes at a price. With summers getting hotter, longer and dryer each year, households feel the hit in their hip pocket as water prices increase. As your local plumber, we know there are some great ways to save a pretty penny and look after the planet as you go. So we’ve pulled together these helpful (and easy to implement) plumbing water-saving ideas. So, save your water and household expenses with these top tips!
Check for leaking taps, pipes, or drains
Don’t underestimate the volume of water – and the number of dollar bills – that can go down the drain from a leaking pipe. This is one of the easiest cost-cutting measures you can take by simply ensuring there are no leaks anywhere in the home. In most cases, this is an easy fix and simply requires purchasing a new tap washer or just tightening up the existing one.
However, if the problem appears more sinister or you need a second opinion, contact our Master Plumbers to fix a leaking tap, blocked drain or pipe. As experts in blocked drain plumbing, we can also identify if you have a bigger problem on your hands, in which case you’ll want to nip it in the bud as early as you can so the water loss – and cost – does not escalate.
Toilet leaks and repair
Guess what uses the most water in the house? It’s not the dishwasher or the washing machine. Believe it or not, the toilet guzzles the most gallons of water in most households, and this is largely thanks to its frequency of use. As such, check for toilet problems such as toilet bowl leaks. Don’t hesitate to call our toilet repair service to keep water bills as low as possible.
Root risk analysis
We live in one of the best cities in the world, no doubt about it! However, the flip side of being a Sydneysider is we can fall victim to a largely invisible, quiet-working foe… Sydney tree roots. Make no mistake, the trees in Sydney are a stubborn bunch, and plenty of home and office pipes and sewer systems know all about it. The strength of these roots can pierce a pipe, resulting in significant water loss.
We conduct a root risk analysis service, which uses the latest video technology to assess root activity under and around your home. We provide a full report to give you all the information you need to then determine the next steps. Ideally, you want to sort this out before it becomes a problem, as waiting too long can result in substantial pipe repair work or, indeed, a 24 7 plumbing emergency call-out.
Rainwater tank pump
Do you have space for a rainwater tank? This could be a terrific water and cost-saving addition to your garden. If you’re worried about it being an eyesore, don’t! Plant surrounding native trees, bushes, or shrubs and you’ll soon have a lovely focal part of the backyard.
More water-saving ideas for around the home
What are some other water-saving ideas you can implement to help keep water consumption and cost in check? We’ve always been fans of the following:
- Wash your fruit and veg in the sink, but put a bowl in there to collect water as you go. You can then use this for other purposes around the house, including flushing the toilet, watering the plants, etc.
- Use an egg timer for the shower. Try lowering the heat as well, as this will help reduce your gas or electricity bill (and cold-water immersion is all the rage for those seeking the latest health kicks, too! So it’s a double bonus!).
- Put a bucket in the shower to help keep your water level use down. Again, you can then use this for other purposes around the house, including cleaning the windows or the car, for example.
- Hold off doing a load of dishes in the dishwasher or clothes in the washing machine until you have a full load.
- Don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth.
- Check online for water-saving plumbing fixtures that might be helpful around your home – we’re here to manage the installation or offer guidance before you buy if that’s helpful!
